It’s official. I’m TESOL certified! I can hardly believe how quickly these past four weeks have gone and how close I am to China! Today was my last day teaching my wonderful little first graders. We mostly just played games, colored, and sang songs. They’ve been working so hard for me for two weeks now, I figured they deserved it. It also allowed me the chance to take a few pictures. (See below). I will definitely miss them, but I can’t wait till next week when I get several new classes of Chinese kids who will be mine for six months! They have no idea how much fun and learning is heading their way.
Still, it will be strange to finally depart Cambodia on Sunday. Time has passed at such a strange rate here. All at once I feel as though four weeks passed in one blink of an eye and that I’ve spent a significant portion of my life here. I’m going to miss the people I’ve met here, both Cambodian and Western. I’m going to miss my hotel room with three beds and no dresser that has become my little home. I’m going to miss any of the number of smells you encounter with one step outside: gasoline, incense, garbage, fruit, and the list goes on. I’m even going to miss the naked children, free-roaming dogs, and guys carrying 10 foot poles on motorbikes. If you had asked me just a few months ago if I ever saw myself living in Phnom Penh and leaving a piece of my heart in Cambodia, I would have said no. But that’s the wonder of life. That’s the wonder of following a plan that is not my own.
