My first few days in Phnom Penh have certainly not been without their exciting moments! I arrived a few days earlier than most of the other people in my program in order to save money on airfare. This has allowed me the time to both get my internal clock set back to normal (after losing a day of my life across the international dateline) as well as see a little bit of Phnom Penh before training starts on Monday.
Most of that sightseeing was done on the back of my new Khmer friend, Mr. Smith's, tuk tuk - or rickshaw. Though, I and a friend did go out on foot this afternoon and promptly got lost. But hey, you never really know a place till you've been lost on its streets at least once!
What may perhaps be the most surprising thing to discover in this developing city is how almost all prices are in American dollars and the use of US currency is pervasive. The influence of Western culture is almost just as widespread. For instance, KFC seems to be a favorite among locals. Still, Cambodia is very much a unique country and Phnom Penh a fascinating city. And I cannot wait to get to know them!
